A laboratory guide to preserving peptide integrity from delivery through reconstitution — temperature, light, and moisture considerations.

Why storage matters

Peptides are sensitive biomolecules. Their stability depends on three environmental factors: temperature, light exposure, and moisture. Improper storage can degrade a specimen before it ever reaches the bench.

Temperature

Most lyophilized peptides are stable at -20°C for extended periods. Short-term storage (days to weeks) at 2–8°C is acceptable, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided — each cycle introduces condensation risk.

Light and moisture

Store specimens in their original amber vials, protected from direct UV exposure. Allow sealed vials to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation from forming inside the container.

Reconstitution

When preparing a specimen for analysis:

  1. Use sterile, filtered solvent appropriate to the peptide's solubility profile.
  2. Add solvent gently along the vial wall — avoid direct force against the lyophilized cake.
  3. Allow the solution to equilibrate for several minutes before use.
